New Nikon D300

* This is a legacy post from my old blog, which I have re-posted with an edited timestamp to reflect the original date.

I picked up this new camera today. My wife and I are on honeymoon (in Maui at the moment) and I found the D300 at a local camera store. The price was good and everything seemed right so we went ahead and got it!This is an amazing camera. Since no one’s done it yet that I have seen, here is a direct 100% crop of an identical image taken first with a D80 and then with the D300 at the same settings. The JPEG compression that my upload uses for this web site has added some slight artifacts, but the overall effect is clear. The D300 really does look much better at higher ISOs! Take a look at the details of each petal:

More to come soon but initial impressions are awesome! Shooting at 6 frames per second is unbelievable, it sounds like a machine gun. I am really liking the camera so far. The LCD screen is large and bright as advertised. After using it for a day the D80’s screen seems small and unclear. Also the camera just works much faster, everything from browsing pictures and menus to scrolling around a zoomed image works much faster.

Overall the camera lives up to the hype, feels very solid and images are coming out crystal clear. I couldn’t recommend it more if you are coming from a D80 or similar camera.
